The National Archives,
occupied in 1935, is the repository of the more valuable and rare
documents of the U.S. Government as well as a reference library. On
display in the Exhibition Hall are the the Declaration of Independence,
Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Louisiana Purchase agreement, the
Marbury v. Madison decision (granting the power of
judicial review to the Supreme Court) and
many others. The founding documents are preserved in special cases
with ink-preserving low light, containing inert gases preserving the
parchment. The National Archives is the seventh building to be
constructed in the Federal Triangle and is a monumental structure designed
in the 20th century Neo-Classical manner by John Russell Pope.
