National
Archives

The National Archives, occupied in 1935, is the repository of the more valuable and rare documents of the U.S. Government as well as a reference library.  On display in the Exhibition Hall are the the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Louisiana Purchase agreement, the Marbury v. Madison  decision (granting the power of judicial review to the Supreme Court) and many others.  The founding documents are preserved in special cases with ink-preserving low light,  containing inert gases preserving the parchment.   The National Archives is the seventh building to be constructed in the Federal Triangle and is a monumental structure designed in the 20th century Neo-Classical manner by John Russell Pope.
